Paris Street Art

In Paris you don’t have to go to Palais de Tokyo or Centre Pompidu to see and enjoy contemporary art, the streets are quite letarally littered with it. High up on four storey buildings or on street level, the city’s walls are painted, stickered and stenciled in a wide variety of styles.

Here are some examples that I came across while walking the streets of Paris last July.
Enjoy!

A Fictional Character to Life

If I could bring one fictional character to life, it would be God.
We would have a cup of tea and share a plate of cookies, and I would ask Him what the hell He was thinking when He created All That Is.
In reply, He would shrug and say that He was wondering what the hell the human race was thinking when we created Him…

Angry talking toilet – Another fantastic animal

Here is another fantastic “animal” one of my students made and what he wrote about it:

Angry talking toilet destroying America

“In the year 2012, an evil scientist named Jacky who lived in New York City, created a monster with 200 toilets for taking over the world. At twenty past twelve a storm came to New York City.
Lightning hit the toilet monster and at that moment it opened it’s eyes. The next morning, as usual, Jackie came to the lab to check the robot, because it was finished, so he wanted to take a photo with it. But that moment, the monster ate him and started his ‘adventure’.
It destroyed America and when the Americans fought it they used a nuclear weapon, but it still destroyed it [America]. It destroyed the whole world in 23 hours and 59 minutes.
Except Tibet, there was the building of Noah’s Ark for the end of the world.
The waves came and smashed it [the monster] into tiny pieces.
When the water left, everyone left alive was cheering for the monster is dead.
But they didn’t notice the tiny bits of the monster where gathering together, they also didn’t notice that the monster wouldn’t die and will start it’s revenge…..
TO BE CONTINUED…”

I guess he saw the movie 2012, but where did the Angry Talking Toilet come from???
Let me remind all you guys out there, that this student is Chinese.

Quote of the week #5

Things a friend said the other day, deliberately and delightfully taken out of context:
“Probably the best reason to have kids is to harvest their organs”.

And, a moment later:
“Evolution is racist”.

Seven flipflops made in China

As I was scouring Taobao for flip flops the other day. Taobao is basically a Chinese Amazon, but here you can get anything and everything, really everything! Including some of the strangest flip-flops I have ever laid my eyes on.

Check it,
On # 1 is the leave slipper:
A dignified runner-up: the watermelon flop
On third place, going for bronze, the flips for squardy feet
#4, the ever popular balloon slippers
Cute bows on fifth place
Angry birds on your feet as #6
And last, but not least, light blue plastic hearts on seventh place
I secretly wish I could get away with some of these….

Despite the enormous amount of fantastic slippers, flip flops and sandals I have, till now, not been able to find some for me… mostly because my feet are giant size compared to Chinese feet standards. The search continues!

Fantastic animal

I gave my sixth graders the assignment to create a fantastic animal, a.k.a. a monster and to write about it in their art reflection report.
This is one sketch a girl made and what she wrote:

Orange ET

“My monster was an ET. It can fly, eat, run… He can do anything. Because it’s omnipotent and it’s a monster.
It likes to eat oranges, because it only eats oranges.”

I wonder where she got the ‘omnipotent’ from…
